Easy Sewing Machine Cover + Free Pattern

I made myself a machine cover!  This is something I’ve wanted since I first got my machine.  So what was that like 11 years ago?  Oh, geez.  How we let time slide away!  Enough of that!  Let’s dive into all of this, because I’ve written a pattern and had it tested and voila…..  I’ve got a free PDF pattern for you to make one as well.

I’m so excited!

Michael Miller sent me some fabrics to play with from one of their new lines called Nature Journal.  You are looking at:

See the whole Nature Journal collection here.

The machine cover came together pretty quickly.  It features a sawtooth star on both sides, so it doesn’t matter which way I turn it.  It’s made with Soft and Stable on the inside.  You might have seen me playing with this in my Instagram stories.  It’s a thick stabilizer, maybe around 3 layers of batting thick, but the best part of this stuff is that it holds its shape without fail.  I could squish this thing and it would bounce right back in place.

Don’t look too closely though, I um, kinda turned my star upside down.  Sigh.  And I worked so hard to get the butterflies in all the right directions.  If you could see me you’d see my pouty face.  I’ll live though.

The cover has a lining too and binding at the bottom to hold both together.  I’ve got it on top of my Bernina and it’s a really good fit.  It’s a pretty easy sew and my testers said the pattern read easily too.  The only thing I’d say was a bit more complicated was pinning the three pieces of the outside together.  All three pieces have the Soft and Stable quilted to them, so it’s a bit chunky and fiddly.

I’m smitten with the curved corners!

I’m very much pleased with the chunky hand stitched binding I added at the bottom.  This is the first time I’ve sewn a binding on this way and I was thrilled with the process and results.  I kinda want to do a quilt like this.  Maybe.  We’ll see.

I also wanted to share a couple of my testers version.  This one is made by Erica.

She added cording to her cover and I really love the way she did her quilting.  Oh, gosh, and can we talk about that squirrel?  How adorable!

Here is another one made by my tester, Beverly.

Beverly made her’s her own too.  She mixed up the backgrounds and opted for batting instead of the Soft and Stable.  She also skipped the binding and did her’s with the “flip it inside out” method.

So there you have it!  Now my machine is covered and the cats can’t come and eat all my thread.  Yeah, they really do that!  Enjoy the free pattern, lovelies and have a good weekend.
