The Rescue Quilts – #12 – Grandmother’s Diamond Flower Garden – The one with all the green and wovens

The Rescue Quilt series is about finishing up quilt tops that were never completed and then remaking the pattern.  Sometimes I find easier / modern ways to make the quilt pattern, and sometimes I change up the pattern a bit to freshen things up.  Other times I just finish the rescue quilt and end the project there.

The goal is to honor the quilt maker who made the quilt top by completing their project, to not waste good craftsmanship (usually done by hand), to ogle long ago yummy fabrics, and to breathe in a little old inspiration and make it new again.

You can view all parts of this series here.

I really have a serious love affair going on with these Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilts.  This time it’s the diamond pattern one, which is actually my favorite kind of them.

This is another I bought on Ebay, just the top and let me tell you, this thing was STINKY.  All caps, because that’s how bad it was.  I just know it had sat in some old closet, tucked away all preciously and it sat and sat and sat until one day it was sold off in an estate sale or garage sale or something of the sort until it finally made its way to me to be berated for it’s stench.  Lol.  Gently, of course.

I soaked it a bathtub overnight with dawn, let it hang to dry outside and got to work.

I can happily report, thanks to a little help from Downy Unstoppables, it is so fresh and clean and shiny and ready for it’s snuggles.

Now that we’ve covered smells, let’s get into the real details.  This was a good find for me.  I was thrilled to get it.  The top was all hand stitched with woven fabrics.  I’m certain they are clothing, but I just can’t be positive, so not smooth soft, but definitely a comfy soft if that makes sense.

There was not a single hole or tear in this one.  Very rare.  There was a stain or two.  Not very noticeable unless you are going over it with a critical eye.  There was also two missing hexagons on it’s side.  I found that odd, but who knows?

I did some really dense quilting on this one.  I always worry about those hand stitches and I wanted to make sure the quilt was good and strong and of course, make the maker proud.  Her quilt maker did such a lovely job with fabrics choices.  I love how each of the diamonds have the same blue and all the colors appear to go well together.  And that plaid!  Oh, it makes me smile!

I quilted all over with an elongated curl and tornados.  I’ve got a tutorial for it here.

  1. Melanie, I LOVE your rescue quilts posts….these quilts were someone’s heart and soul, and somehow got left behind. They are gems after your TLC!

  2. My mom actually has a quilt in this same pattern that was made from my grandfather’s baby clothes. He was born in 1900. It has hand writing on it saying who it was pieced by and who it was quilted by. It’s in perfect condition having been stored away all these years.
