Quilt Reveal – Anthologie #2 – The Butterfly Version

 

The entirety of the summer I’ve been working on this quilt.  I’m both pleased and sad to be finished with it.  I almost always enjoy working on my quilts, but this one was particularly fun.  I like these “quilt-along” way of making quilts.  I like sampler quilts!  You start out with a big fat stack of fat quarters and low volumes and just chip away at it until you get a finished quilt.

For the past two weeks (almost every day), I’ve posted the videos I made while I worked on this quilt.  This was a new feature that’s part of the pattern.  See them all here if you missed this.

I purchased the butterflies here.  If you do a search there, you can also find other options of butterflies in a bunch of sizes and styles.  They set the tone for the rest of the quilt.  I started out with a stack of fat quarters, but I also had to dig around in my stash for applique opportunities.  All the flowers around the butterflies are older fabrics that I’ve been sitting on forever.  I also pulled quite a bit of scraps for this quilt that I was hoping to make work.

I took my time with the quilting on this one.  I was stretching myself and I wanted to try some new to me things, like outlining.  I gave outlining a go on the Attic Window blocks.  It was crazy fussy, but I really loved the look.  I outlined about a 1/4″ from the blocks and then I outlined the ditch around the block, and then quilted inside each one with a flower crown.  It turned out so pretty.  I’m kicking myself now though for not doing a bit more of that.  I wish I’d done it on the Dresdens in particular.  It really made things pop.

I also tried some larger shapes in the quilting. I quilted really big feathers and asterich flowers in some of the larger pieces and then did tight quilting around them. I liked it at first, but now I’m wishing I had filled in the feathers a bit and filled in the larger flowers (sassy grannies) just to give a bit more fill. I think I left it a bit too open, which seems to be something I keep doing.  It hasn’t planted in my head yet, I guess. I forget.

I do really like all the negative space in this quilt and I LOVE the look of the gold thread on all the low volumes. I’ll try and get a bit braver with using a bit more contrasting threads.
