Deciding what to quilt where can sometimes be harder than the actual free-motion quilting.Before I start quilting, I like to sit down with the quilt and make a plan. I look at the different areas of the quilt, think about what I want to emphasize, decide where I want more or less texture, and figure out how the quilting designs can work together before I ever sit down at the machine.In this video, I'm planning the free-motion quilting for my Light in the Dark Mini Quilt, but you can use this same process when you're trying to decide how to quilt any quilt.This video comes from the Light in the Dark Mini Quilt Class inside Quilty Class. Ever finish piecing a quilt block only to realize it’s slightly off? Not enough to take the whole thing apart, but just enough that the next pieces don’t quite line up?That happened to me while making my Light in the Dark Mini Quilt, so I thought it was the perfect opportunity to show you how I handle it.In this video, I’ll show you how I find and match the centers, pin everything into place, and gently ease a small difference across the seam instead of letting all that extra fabric end up at one side.We’ll also talk about why your piecing might be slightly off in the first place, including checking your 1/4" seam allowance and cutting accuracy.This is one of those little quilting skills that comes in handy again and again. The Light in the Dark Mini Quilt is a 14" x 14" confident beginner project featuring a 9 patch center and half rectangle triangles that create the star points.In the Light in the Dark Mini Quilt Class, I'll walk you through the entire project, including my favorite way to trim HRTs using washi tape and a few Sharpie dots.
