In Chapter 3, we work on three designs that are id In Chapter 3, we work on three designs that are ideal for borders and sashing:

Swirls in a border
Swirls are a classic FMQ design, but they are not the easiest to master. When I first started quilting, my swirls were always a little too pointy or just kind of strange looking. Honestly, mine still sometimes come out a little funky. That’s okay. We stitch anyway and keep building that rounded movement.

Ribbon candy
Ribbon candy is beautiful and traditional, but let’s just say it can feel a bit hard. We try a looser approach too, and I show you a version I used in the borders of my Dilly Dally quilt that I absolutely love.

Wishbone loops
Wishbones are a personal favorite. I usually quilt them as a filler, especially inside flower centers. In this chapter, we take that familiar design and try it in a border space to give it a new role.

We are practicing foundational free motion movement, one design at a time.
Meander, loops, pebbles, and swirls are our focus this week.

✂ Keep showing up to your machine
FMQ grows through repetition. Even ten minutes of practice helps build confidence and flow.

I’ve been free motion quilting since 2018 and it h I’ve been free motion quilting since 2018 and it has been the slowest part of the quilting journey for me. It did not come naturally. I practiced through a lot of very ugly stitching before anything started to look the way I imagined it could.

I keep seeing comments like “I could never do this,” and I just want to say… I used to think that too. I was you. It really does change if you keep going, even when it feels like it’s not working.

Thank you for all the love on this piece this week. It feels like I finally hit a little milestone with my quilting, and that’s a pretty special feeling. ❤️
Spent about two hours yesterday on this. One of my Spent about two hours yesterday on this. One of my many goals is a whole cloth quilt with a lot of doodle quilting. Maybe next year will be my year.
