Quilt as Desired — Chapter 3: Borders and Structured Movement

Chapter 3 of Quilt as Desired is now live inside the Quilt Class dashboard. This chapter is all about borders and structured movement, which is one of my favorite areas to explore in free motion quilting. Borders give us a beautiful space to practice our designs and show off the flow we’ve been building. They are forgiving, playful, and a wonderful reminder that quilting does not require perfection to be stunning.

Let’s make quilts…
What We Are Quilting in Chapter 3
We work on three designs that are ideal for borders and sashing:
Swirls in a border
Swirls are a classic FMQ design, but they are not the easiest to master. When I first started quilting, my swirls were always a little too pointy or just kind of strange looking. Honestly, mine still sometimes come out a little funky. That’s okay. We stitch anyway and keep building that rounded movement.
Ribbon candy
Ribbon candy is beautiful and traditional, but let’s just say it can feel a bit hard. We try a looser approach too, and I show you a version I used in the borders of my Dilly Dally quilt that I absolutely love.
Wishbone loops
Wishbones are a personal favorite. I usually quilt them as a filler, especially inside flower centers. In this chapter, we take that familiar design and try it in a border space to give it a new role.
Practice Without Pressure
We draw simple lanes to give structure and direction. Then we quilt one design inside each lane. You can stay traditional or go playful. The goal is movement, texture, and confidence. A wobble here or a bumpy curve there is part of the story your quilt tells.
