Chapter 5: Organic and Curved Movement
This chapter includes four lessons:
- Lesson 14: Paisley
- Lesson 15: Toothpaste Swirls
- Lesson 16: Organic Squiggle Lines
- Lesson 17: S-Curves
Each of these designs builds on earlier movement skills while introducing new challenges around spacing, echoing, and consistency.

Lesson 14: Paisley
Paisley is an all-over design. While the basic teardrop shape is fairly approachable, the real challenge comes from direction. These shapes are meant to travel in every direction across the block, which can feel tricky at first.
There is also a lot of echoing involved in this design. When it is time to move from one area of the block to another, echoing around the paisleys already stitched creates a natural and low-stress path forward. The movement itself is simple, but the decision making takes practice.

Lesson 15: Toothpaste Swirls
Toothpaste Swirls is the most challenging design in this chapter and one of the more complex designs in the class so far. The motion creates a ribbon-like line that moves into a swirl and then back out again. The swirl tail usually ends with four lines, though it can be adjusted if needed.
The hardest part of this design is filling in gaps. Gaps happen easily, and learning how to notice them and gently fill space is a key part of the lesson. Even with that challenge, this is one of my favorite designs to use and something I reach for often when quilting.

Lesson 16: Organic Squiggle Lines
For Organic Squiggle Lines, the block is divided into four sections, similar to a simple four-patch layout. From the center, organic swirling lines move outward into each quadrant.
This approach helps keep the design balanced while still feeling loose and natural. The finished result is soft and flowing, and it works beautifully in four-patch blocks, borders, and background spaces.

Lesson 17: S-Curves
S-Curves are a simple design with a strong visual effect. They work well in borders and sashing, but they are especially effective when stitched closely together in background areas. When grouped tightly, they often create the look of stems and leaves.
The biggest challenge with S-Curves is consistency. The movement is straightforward, but keeping the curves even takes focus and repetition.

How to Take Quilt as Desired
Quilt as Desired can be taken in two different ways.
The class is available as an individual course, which gives full access to all lessons, including the complete set of twenty five free motion quilting designs and the final rag quilt assembly.
Quilt as Desired is also included inside Quilty Club. Quilty Club members receive access to this class along with every other Quilt Class available. This option works well for quilters who enjoy working through multiple projects and techniques throughout the year.
Both options provide the same class content. The difference is simply how access is structured.
Why This Chapter Matters
Chapter 5 is an important turning point in the class. These designs help bridge the gap between basic movement and more advanced all-over quilting. The focus shifts toward observation, spacing, and confident decision making while stitching.
If Quilt as Desired is already open in the dashboard, Chapter 5 is ready to explore.
