Quilt as Desired: Chapter 9 — Rag Quilt Assembly

Chapter 9 of Quilt as Desired is all about bringing everything together. After working through all of the free motion quilting designs in this class, this final chapter walks through assembling your practice blocks into a finished rag quilt.

This chapter is intentionally simple and forgiving, much like the quilt itself. Rag quilts are sewn with the seams exposed on the top of the quilt. Once those seams are snipped and the quilt is washed and dried, they soften and fray, creating texture and movement that only improves with time. It’s a great way to let go of perfection and focus on the process.

What’s Included in Chapter 9

In this chapter, we work through the final steps of turning your quilted samples into a finished quilt.

  • Lesson 30: Pattern Walkthrough and Download
    • We start by walking through the rag quilt pattern together and reviewing the downloadable PDF. This lesson sets the stage and answers common questions before you begin.
  • Lesson 31: Layout
    • Next, we lay out the quilt. This is where you decide how your blocks will live together and get a first look at the quilt as a whole.
  • Lesson 32: Sewing the Quilt Together
    • This lesson covers sewing the blocks into rows and joining the rows together, step by step, with clear guidance and reminders along the way.
  • Lesson 33: Snipping the Seams
    • Here we snip all of the exposed seams. This is a simple but important step that prepares the quilt for washing and helps create that classic rag quilt texture.
  • Lesson 34: Finished Rag Quilt
    • Finally, I show you my finished quilt and talk through what to look for as yours comes together.

Why a Rag Quilt Works So Well Here

Rag quilts are incredibly forgiving. The exposed seams, the fraying, and the texture all work together to create a quilt that feels relaxed and lived-in from the start. That makes it a perfect finish for this class.

This quilt becomes a record of your free motion quilting journey. Each block shows where you started, how your movement changed, and how your confidence grew as you worked through the designs. Instead of a pile of practice samples, you end up with something finished, useful, and full of progress.

If you’ve been quilting along with Quilt as Desired, this chapter is a satisfying way to close the loop and enjoy everything you’ve worked on.
