From Quilt Blocks to Finished Quilt Top

There’s a moment in every quilt when all the individual blocks finally come together.
Up until then, everything exists in pieces. Stacks of blocks. Small sections. Parts of something larger. But once you begin sewing the rows and joining them together, the quilt starts to feel whole.
This is the step where the design really opens up.
In the video below, I walk through how I move from finished blocks to a completed quilt top, including how I sew blocks into rows, join the rows together, and keep seams aligned along the way.

When assembling your quilt top, the biggest things to pay attention to are seam alignment and pressing direction. Pressing your seams consistently allows them to nest together naturally, which helps keep your rows straight and your intersections clean.
I like to sew my blocks into rows first, keeping everything organized and manageable. Once the rows are complete, I join them together one at a time, matching seams as I go. Taking this step slowly helps prevent shifting and keeps the quilt top square.
It’s a simple process, but it’s also one of the most satisfying parts of quilting. Seeing all of your blocks connected, watching the colors spread across the surface, and realizing you now have a full quilt top in front of you.
This demo is an excerpt from the Soulshine Quilt Class inside Quilty Class, where we walk step by step from fabric prep all the way through quilting and finishing.
