Lulu Louise Quilty Class: Chapter 2 – Preparing + Cutting Fabrics

We’re ready to start working with our Lulu Louise fabrics! 💕

Chapter 1 was all about getting acquainted with the quilt, gathering supplies, walking through the pattern, and choosing our 14 foreground fabrics and background.

Now in Chapter 2 of the Lulu Louise Quilty Class, we’re getting those fabrics ready to sew.

Preparing the Fabrics

Before cutting, we’ll spend a little time getting our fabrics nice and crisp.

I’ll show how I press my fabrics and use pressing spray to make them easier to work with. This is a simple step, but with Lulu Louise, we’re going to be working with long width-of-fabric strips, so starting with well-pressed fabric makes the cutting and strip piecing that follows much easier.

This is also the time to get those folds and wrinkles out before anything meets the rotary cutter.

Cutting Those Long WOF Strips

Lulu Louise is constructed using strip piecing, and that means we’re going to be cutting quite a few WOF strips.

One thing I especially want to show in this chapter is how I handle the manufacturer’s fold in the fabric. When fabric has been sitting folded on the bolt, that crease can make it tricky to get a nice, straight cut across the entire width of fabric.

We’ll press out that fold, get the fabric properly aligned, and work through cutting those longer pieces accurately.

Once everything is cut, we’ll be ready to organize our pieces and begin making the strip sets that create Lulu Louise.

Take Your Time Here

This isn’t the flashiest part of making a quilt, but good preparation makes such a difference once the sewing begins.

Get those fabrics pressed, take the time to make accurate cuts, and don’t feel any need to rush through this chapter. Lulu Louise is completely self-paced, so work through the lessons whenever you’re ready.

New lessons and chapters are being added each week as we work our way through the class.
