Lulu Louise Quilty Class: Chapter 1 – Getting Started

The Lulu Louise Quilty Class is officially underway! 💕

We’re beginning with all the little things that make the actual sewing go so much smoother: getting familiar with the quilt, gathering supplies, walking through the pattern, and choosing fabrics.

Lulu Louise is a beginner-friendly quilt made with simple, efficient strip piecing, and there are three sizes to choose from: Crib, Throw, and Bed. The quilt pattern is included with the class, so everything needed to begin is waiting inside.

Chapter 1 – Getting Started

Chapter 1 is all about getting ready before we start cutting and sewing.

Lesson 1 – About the Lulu Louise Quilt

We’ll start with a closer look at Lulu Louise, including a little of the story behind the quilt and what we’ll be doing throughout the class.

Lulu Louise was originally designed for my book A Life With Quilts. For this new standalone version, I’ve added three quilt sizes and updated the construction with a more efficient strip-piecing method.

We’ll also look at how the class works. Lulu Louise is completely self-paced, and new lessons and chapters will be added each week as we work through the class during September and October.

Lesson 2 – Finding Your Way Around Quilty Class

If this is the first class you’ve taken with me, this lesson will give you a quick tour of Quilty Class.

We’ll look at the dashboard, where to find lessons and downloads, how to move through the course, and where everything lives so it’s easy to find again later.

Lesson 3 – Supplies & Tools

Next, we’ll gather our supplies.

Lulu Louise doesn’t require a lot of specialty equipment. We’ll go over the basic quilting tools I’ll be using for cutting and piecing, along with the supplies I’ll use later when we move into free-motion quilting.

And no specialty quilting rulers are required for the free-motion quilting in this class. Our feathers and S-curves will both be completely hand-guided.

Lesson 4 – Pattern Download & Walkthrough

The Lulu Louise quilt pattern is included with the class, and in this lesson we’ll download it and take a look through it together before we begin.

We’ll talk about the three quilt sizes, fabric requirements, cutting instructions, and how the pattern is organized so everything makes sense when it’s time to start sewing.

Lesson 5 – Choosing Fabrics

And finally, we get to play with fabric!

Lulu Louise uses 14 foreground fabrics plus a background, and those fabric choices can completely change the personality of the quilt.

We’ll look at lots of different Lulu Louise mock-ups and talk about color and value, different ways to arrange the fabrics, and some ideas for creating a fabric pull that feels completely your own.

Remember, there’s no need to keep up with the pace of the class. New chapters are being released weekly, but Lulu Louise is completely self-paced. Work through each lesson whenever it fits into your own sewing time.
