Pattern is in my book, A Life With Quilts. Get it here.
Since the last time I posted a free motion quilting tutorial, I’ve changed machines. I am now using a Bernina Q20, which is technically a longarm machine… BUT I don’t have it on a frame, so it’s basically the same thing as quilting on a domestic. The only difference is I have A TON of space to work and I don’t have to drop any feed dogs.
If you’ve never free motion quilted before, brush up on some basic skills first with this video.
If you are looking for some of my other FMQ videos, you’ll find them here:
- Basic Meander – This video covers things like how to bring up your bottom thread, lowering your feed dog and how to maneuver your quilt around.
- Succulents
- Scallop Bubbles, Fire Triangles, Swirl Flower And Drapes
- Elongated Curls And Tornados
- Lazy S, Loopy Lines + Orange Peel Bloom
- Ammonites + Swirls
What we are quilting
I’m quilting a small version of my Soulshine quilt pattern. I showed you this quilt yesterday right here.
Today, I’m going to show you how to quilt:
- Using ruler work – This is just straight lines mostly in the ditch. I’m using this FMQ ruler.
- Elongated curls
- Swirls
- Pointed Leaves

Supplies
- Gloves – Machingers.
- I’m using Microquilter in silver for my top and bobbin thread.
- You don’t need a fancy machine to free motion quilt, you just need one that has a feed dog that lowers (check your manual).
- I am quilting on a Bernina Q20 machine.
- Here’s the ruler I’m using.
- I’ve spray basted my block if you are wondering why there are not any pins. Here’s the spray I use.
