Two Methods for How to Make Half Rectangle Triangles

I’ve been working on a gazillion half rectangle triangles today. I have a new sampler quilt pattern coming and we are still on the trail of those pesky little HRTs. I happen to LOVE them, but if you are new to them, I know they can seem a little tedious.
The pic above is a block from my Bad Girl Quilt a couple of years ago.
Let’s jump in!

About Half Rectangle Triangles
Though similar to half square triangles, you have to jump a few hoops to get them to work out similarly. I think they have a way of making any old fashion block a bit more modern. I think that’s why I love them so much. Plus, diamonds! Remember this quilt….
Because of the Bad Girl quilt and it’s many half rectangle triangles, I ended up designing a ruler specifically and only for HRTs. I needed a way to make them easier for me. You can find that ruler here. My ruler is on the low end when it comes to prices which I was very happy about, but still, I remember being a quilter on a tighter budget in the beginning, so today I’m showing you two of my tutorials: one with the ruler and one without the ruler.

Method 1
Let’s start with the easier of the two….using the ruler. There’s a bit of a learning curve when it comes to making HRTs, but once you finally wrap your head around them (took me a looonnnggg minute), the ruler will make more sense.

Method 2
This method is actually pretty clever and though I did have the idea to use a paper template for making them when I first wrote the Bad Girl quilt pattern, it was one of the members of my quilt along who showed me how to make that paper template even easier. I can still remember her telling me about it and me thinking, “whoa, you’re a genius!”

Well, that will do it for today. I’m happy to answer any questions you might have about the ruler, so don’t hesitate to ask.
