Scrappy Quilt Backing Ideas – Video Tutorial
The Soulshine quilt pattern releases on February 25, 2022 and there’s something new in it that I will start adding to all my quilt patterns: Scrappy backing pages.
These pages have diagrams and instructions for how to make the most efficient scrappy backing for all the quilt sizes within the pattern.
You might have seen this from me in the book A Life With Quilts I published in 2021. It’s the same thing. These pages detail how I would make scrappy backing.
Watch the video below if you need a bit more understanding about how to read these pages and what this is all about.

Swayful Quilty Class – BEGINS JUNE 29
A new quilt is beginning inside Quilty Class. Swayful features a woven knot design created from rotating blocks and simple snowball construction. The pattern is fat quarter friendly for the foreground fabrics and includes a unique border that carries the movement all the way to the edges of the quilt.
We’ll begin on June 29 and work through the quilt top together step-by-step as new lessons are released.
If you’re planning to make quilts with us throughout the year, Quilty Club is the easiest way to follow along and access each class as we go.
Let’s make quilts…
Used in the Video
I’m using my Earthy Goodness fabrics for the quilt backing and the Soulshine quilt on the wall behind me was made with Cinnamon Tea fabrics. See more pictures of it here.
If you’d like a copy of the page I’m working from in the video, you can find it here.

Melanie, I love your tutorials. You take the necessary time to show exactly how to do things, and it matters. Over the last 3 years I have learned so much about the process of quilting from you. Thank you!
That’s so nice to hear! Thank you!
This was a great tutorial, Melanie! I loved it! I’ve struggled with pattern matching on the backing too. I’ve seen people use glue to match the pattern perfectly but that seems too fussy for me. I’m definitely going to give your scrappy backings a try!
Glad to hear you enjoyed this! 🙂
I have been constructing quilt backing with similar fabric and random squares thanks to Karen Brown at https://www.justgetitdonequilts.com/. This technique was a game changer for me. I incorporate left over quilt squares and fabric scraps. It’s a little more work but for I absolutely love the process. I use 1/4 inch seam allowance.
Loved this tutorial. Thank you!
Hope it helps!
