Must-See Cutting Workflow for Large Background Fabrics | A SNEAK PEEK into the Carolina Mingle Quilt Class

Cutting large background fabrics for a quilt can feel overwhelming, but I’ve found a method that works for me and saves time. In this post, I’m sharing a sneak peek from the Carolina Mingle Quilt class, where I demonstrate my go-to technique for cutting oversized background fabrics.

In the video below, I start with three yards of fabric and you how step by step how I prepare, cut strips, and subcut those strips into the pieces I need. My approach is designed to reduce fabric movement and ensure accuracy–a workflow I use for all my quilting projects.

My Workflow for Cutting Large Background Fabrics

  1. I cut all the strips I need from the three yards (or whatever you need) from the background fabric at one time. By doing this before subcutting, I can avoid moving the fabric around on my cutting mat, which helps me keep everything aligned and prevents errors.
  2. Once I’ve cut all the strips, I set them aside and go back to subcut those strips into smaller pieces as directed in the quilt pattern.

This workflow makes handling large background fabrics more manageable and efficient.
