How to FUSSY CUT Fabric ON POINT | EASY Quilting Tutorial

Let’s talk about fussy cutting–but with a little twist! Instead of cutting straight up and down, we’re fussy cutting on point today, which means your fabric design will sit at an angle in your quilt block. It’s a fun way to add extra movement and charm to your quilts, and honestly, once you start fussy cutting, it’s hard to stop!
In the video below, I walk. you through my favorite method for fussy cutting on point using a 6 1/2″ ruler, washi tape, and a Sharpie. This washi tape helps mark the size you need, and the Sharpie marks the center, so you can line up your fabric just right. And don’t worry–a little nail polish remover and a Qtip will take it right off!
Happening Now
Swayful Quilty Class – BEGINS JUNE 29
A new quilt is beginning inside Quilty Class. Swayful features a woven knot design created from rotating blocks and simple snowball construction. The pattern is fat quarter friendly for the foreground fabrics and includes a unique border that carries the movement all the way to the edges of the quilt.
We’ll begin on June 29 and work through the quilt top together step-by-step as new lessons are released.
If you’re planning to make quilts with us throughout the year, Quilty Club is the easiest way to follow along and access each class as we go.
Let’s make quilts…
Why Fussy Cut On Point?
- Add More Movement to Your Quilt Blocks – Instead of everything being straight, this gives a fun, tilted effect.
- Great for Diamond and Star Blocks – If your quilt pattern has on-point blocks, fussy cutting this way makes a huge difference!
- Gives You a Fresh Perspective on Your Fabric – Sometimes, a print looks even better when turned on point.
- Helps Showcase Certain Motifs – Maybe that flower, star or geometric shape looks best at an angle instead of straight up.
If you want to make fussy cutting even easier, you can also use fussy cut rulers (like these ones). They come in different sizes with built in guides so you can get perfectly centered cuts every time!
