A Free Motion Quilting Pillow, Start to Finish

There’s something really special about sitting down with a quilt sandwich and letting the design unfold as you stitch. This free motion quilting pillow started as a simple idea and slowly turned into one of my favorite finishes.
I wanted to share the process with you, not as a tutorial, but as a quiet look at what free motion quilting can feel like when you let go of rules and just move.

Soulshine Quilt Class
What we’re making:
The Soulshine Quilt, a beginner-friendly star quilt made with two simple blocks.
About this class:
In this class, we’ll work through fabric prep, block construction, layout, and hands-on quilting techniques. You can choose a scrappy or modern version and move at your own pace as we quilt the project together inside Quilty Class.
Timeline:
We’ll begin around February 15 and wrap up sometime in March.
Let’s make quilts…
🎥 Watch the Quilting Come Together
This video shows the quilting in real time. There’s a flower in the center, and from there the design flows outward with soft feathered shapes reaching toward the corners. No teaching, no step-by-step, just stitching and watching the texture build.

About the Design
I didn’t map this out ahead of time. I started with the flower in the middle and let everything else respond to that shape. The feathers weren’t meant to be perfect or mirrored. They were meant to move.
This is one of the things I love most about free motion quilting. You don’t have to know exactly where you’re going. You just have to keep going.
From Quilt Top to Pillow
Once the quilting was finished, I turned the piece into a pillow. I love using quilted panels this way. Pillows are a great place to experiment with all-over designs because they’re manageable and feel complete quickly.
If you’ve ever wanted to try something new without committing to a full quilt, a pillow is a really good place to start.
If You’re Curious About Learning Free Motion Quilting

If watching this made you think, “I’d love to learn how to do that,” you’re not alone.
Inside Quilty Club, we’re working through a class called Quilt as Desired. It’s a self-paced free motion quilting class focused on getting comfortable with movement, building confidence, and learning through practice, not perfection.
It’s not about rushing to a finished quilt. It’s about showing up, moving the fabric, and getting a little better each time.

Free motion quilting doesn’t have to be complicated to be beautiful. Sometimes it’s just about letting your hands move and trusting where the stitches lead.
