Quilting the Soulshine Mini Quilt

I recently finished up a Soulshine mini quilt, and I wanted to share the process with you, especially the quilting and finishing steps. Minis are one of my favorite ways to explore new quilting ideas, and this one was a great opportunity to play with both free motion quilting and ruler work.
In the video below, you’ll see me working on the mini quilt from start to finish. I begin by binding the quilt, then jump back to show the free motion quilting and ruler work I used across the background and foreground. At the end, I finish the mini with hanging corners, insert a dowel, and hang it on my mini quilt wall.

Soulshine Quilt Class
What we’re making:
The Soulshine Quilt, a beginner-friendly star quilt made with two simple blocks.
About this class:
In this class, we’ll work through fabric prep, block construction, layout, and hands-on quilting techniques. You can choose a scrappy or modern version and move at your own pace as we quilt the project together inside Quilty Class.
Timeline:
We’ll begin around February 15 and wrap up sometime in March.
Let’s make quilts…
Free Motion Quilting and Ruler Work
For this mini, I focused on quilting the background and foreground differently, which is something I love doing on star quilts. The background quilting adds movement and texture, while the foreground quilting helps the star shapes stand out.
Minis are a low-pressure way to try new quilting ideas. If something doesn’t turn out exactly how you pictured it, that’s okay. You still learn a lot, and the scale makes it approachable.

About the Soulshine Quilt
This mini quilt is based on the Soulshine Quilt, a beginner-friendly star quilt made with two simple blocks, the Shine Block and the Soul Block. The full quilt can be made in multiple sizes and works beautifully as either a scrappy quilt using fat quarters or a modern quilt with coordinated fabrics.
Inside the Soulshine Quilty Class, we don’t stop at piecing the quilt top. We actually quilt the quilt together, spending time on both foreground and background quilting so the finished quilt feels cohesive and intentional.

Hanging a Mini Quilt
To finish this mini, I added hanging corners and a dowel so it could be displayed on my mini quilt wall. This is one of my favorite ways to finish minis because it keeps the edges clean and makes it easy to swap quilts in and out.
Minis are perfect for testing ideas, practicing quilting, and enjoying a small finish without committing to a large project.
If you’d like to see more quilting demos like this, or want to quilt along with me on a larger project, I’d love to have you join us inside Quilty Class.
