Morning Rising Mini Quilt Class: Chapter 2 — Building the Background Block

Chapter 2 of the Morning Rising Mini Quilt Class is now available inside Quilty Class, and this is where the quilt really starts to take shape.
In this chapter, we’re building the background block that the Dresden plate will eventually sit on. We begin by piecing the center nine-patch and then continue adding the surrounding pieces to complete the full background.
Even though this part of the quilt is fairly straightforward, accuracy really matters here because the cleaner and flatter this block is, the prettier the finished Dresden will sit on top of it later.

Piecing the 9-Patch
The center of the background block begins with a simple 9-patch.
This is one of those classic quilt blocks that seems easy at first glance, but it’s actually a great opportunity to practice accuracy and consistency while sewing.
One of the biggest things I focus on in this lesson is seam allowance. A true quarter-inch seam allowance matters so much here because even tiny inconsistencies begin to add up across multiple pieces.
One helpful tip is to sew just slightly to the inside of the 1/4″ line instead of directly on top of it. That tiny adjustment helps account for the fold of the fabric once the seam is pressed and usually results in much more accurate finished units.
It’s a small detail, but it really makes a difference.
Completing the Background Block
Once the 9-patch is complete, we continue building outward to finish the full background block.
This part is very satisfying because you finally get to see the scale of the mini quilt and how everything is going to work together once the Dresden is added later on.
As the block grows, pressing becomes just as important as sewing accuracy. Taking a few extra seconds to press carefully and keep seams flat will make quilting much easier later.
I also think this chapter is a good reminder that simple piecing can still be really beautiful. There’s not a lot of complicated construction happening here, but the layout and fabric choices do so much of the work.

Building a Strong Foundation
Even though the Dresden plate will eventually become the focal point of this quilt, the background block is what gives the entire project structure and balance.
Getting this part accurate now makes the rest of the quilt much smoother moving forward.
And honestly, once the background is complete, it starts feeling like a real quilt instead of just a stack of fabric pieces sitting beside the sewing machine ✂️
