Morning Rising Mini Quilt Class: Chapter 1 — Getting Started

The Morning Rising Mini Quilt Class is officially underway, and Chapter 1 is now available inside Quilty Class.

This first chapter is all about getting comfortable with the project before we begin sewing. We’re walking through the pattern together, talking through fabric choices, organizing our pieces, and getting everything prepared so the sewing process feels much smoother once we begin.

If you’ve ever started a quilt and felt unsure about your fabric choices or overwhelmed by the prep work, this chapter is designed to help with exactly that.

What’s Included in Chapter 1

In this chapter, we begin with a full overview of the Morning Rising mini quilt and talk through what we’ll be making together throughout the class.

We also walk through the pattern page by page, including the additional hanging-method PDF that comes from the upcoming Book of Many Mini Quilts. This quilt can be made with either the included Dresden template or a Dresden ruler, so you can choose whichever method works best for you.

One of my favorite lessons in this chapter is the fabric lesson because we really spend time thinking about why certain fabric combinations work well for this quilt.

Choosing Fabrics for Morning Rising

Fabric choice makes a huge difference in this pattern, especially because of the Dresden design and the movement created by the different prints.

In the class, I share several examples of combinations that work really well and a few that are a bit trickier to balance. We talk about contrast, scale, tonal fabrics versus busy prints, and ways to make fabric selection feel less overwhelming.

For the Dresden fabrics especially, I think this quilt becomes much easier to balance when one print is softer or more tonal while the other brings in a bit more movement or detail.

That does not mean two busy prints cannot work beautifully together, because they absolutely can. But if you are looking for a simpler starting point, that approach helps a lot.

Cutting and Organizing Your Fabrics

The final lesson in this chapter focuses on cutting and organizing the quilt pieces before we begin sewing.

I also show how to fussy cut one of the prints used in the quilt and demonstrate two different cutting setups depending on whether you prefer using a rotating cutting mat or a standard cutting mat.

These little preparation steps may not seem exciting at first, but they make such a difference once the sewing begins.

Quilting Together

One of my favorite parts of Quilty Class is seeing everyone work through the same project together.

As you begin your quilt, don’t forget to share your progress inside the community. Seeing everyone’s fabric choices and quilting styles always makes the class feel more like we’re quilting together instead of quilting alone.

And honestly, I just love seeing you make my patterns 💛
