Lulu Louise is back, and this time we’re making her together!

I originally designed the Lulu Louise quilt while writing my book A Life With Quilts. I’ve made this quilt several times since then, and it’s one of those designs I keep coming back to. There’s something about the simple shapes and the way color and value move through the quilt that I just love.

I’ve now revisited Lulu Louise as a standalone quilt pattern, added three sizes, and updated the construction with a much more efficient strip-piecing method.

And there’s a brand-new Lulu Louise Quilty Class to go along with it.

Meet Lulu Louise

In the video above, I’m giving you a closer look at Lulu Louise, including the story behind the quilt, the three sizes, fabric requirements, supplies, how the quilt is constructed, and what we’ll be learning together inside the Quilty Class.

Lulu Louise is a beginner-friendly quilt made with simple, efficient strip piecing. Width-of-fabric strips are sewn together to create strip sets, which are then cut into units and used to build the quilt.

The pattern includes three sizes:

• Crib: 38″ × 48″
• Throw: 57″ × 72″
• Bed: 76″ × 96″

Each size uses 14 foreground fabrics plus a background, making Lulu Louise such a fun quilt for playing with color and value.

The Lulu Louise Quilty Class

The Lulu Louise Quilty Class covers both piecing and free-motion quilting.

We’ll begin with choosing and preparing fabrics, cutting, making our strip sets, building the columns, and assembling the quilt top.

Then we’ll move into free-motion quilting. Before quilting begins, we’ll draw out the entire quilting plan together. We’ll quilt feathers through the foreground of Lulu Louise and S-curves through the background.

And no specialty quilting rulers are needed. All of the free-motion quilting we’ll be doing is completely hand-guided.

The Lulu Louise quilt pattern is included with the class.

The Class Is Self-Paced

Lulu Louise begins September 14, and I’m currently building the class as we go.

New lessons and chapters will be added each week until the class is complete, but there’s no schedule to keep up with. The class is completely self-paced, so lessons can be watched and quilts can be made whenever the timing works best.

Joining after the class is complete? Everything will already be there waiting.

I’ve made Lulu Louise in quite a few different fabric combinations over the years, and that’s still one of my favorite things about this quilt. The pattern stays the same, but changing the fabrics can give it an entirely different personality.
