We’re finishing our Lulu Louise quilt top! 💕

By the time we reach Chapter 4, we’ve done quite a bit of work. We’ve chosen and prepared our fabrics, cut all those long WOF strips, made our strip sets, cut them apart, and built the foreground columns.

Now we get to put all of those pieces together and finally see Lulu Louise become a quilt top.

Lesson 12 – Laying Out the Quilt

We start by getting all of our foreground columns laid out in their proper places.

This is the point where I like to get everything out where I can see the entire quilt. We’ll arrange the foreground columns along with the background squares and rectangles that belong at the top and bottom.

Take a little time here to check the placement and orientation of everything before sewing begins. Once we move into chain piecing, keeping the pieces in order becomes especially important.

Lesson 13 – Chain Piecing the Background Pieces

I did something a little different with this Lulu Louise than I have with my previous versions.

We need to attach the background pieces at the top and bottom of our foreground columns, and this time I decided to chain piece them.

And I really liked it!

It made this part of the assembly feel quicker and more efficient, although it does require a little extra organization. Because we’re moving from one column to the next without completely finishing each one individually, we have to be mindful of keeping everything in the correct order.

I’ll show you exactly how I worked through the layout so the columns stayed organized while I chain pieced the background pieces into place.

It’s a small change from the way I’ve assembled Lulu Louise quilts in the past, but I think it made this stage of the quilt come together more smoothly.

Lesson 14 – Completing the Quilt Top

Once all of the background pieces are attached, we’re ready to put the whole thing together.

We’ll return our completed columns to the layout, make sure everything is still exactly where it belongs, and then begin sewing the columns together.

This is when all those separate pieces finally become one finished Lulu Louise quilt top.

And after spending so much time looking at Lulu Louise as individual fabrics, strips, strip sets, units, and columns, seeing the entire quilt top together is pretty satisfying.

The Lulu Louise Quilt Top Is Finished!

And that’s it for piecing! 🎉

By the end of Chapter 4, the Lulu Louise quilt top is complete.

I especially enjoyed trying the chain-piecing method for this version. There was a little more to think about in terms of keeping everything organized, but it made attaching all of those background pieces feel faster and easier.

And now we’re ready for a completely different part of this quilt.

Next up: free motion quilting.

We’ll start by planning out the quilting before moving into the feathers through the foreground and S-curves through the background.

I am very ready to get some texture on this quilt. 💕
