Carolina Mingle Quilt – #2 – Quilt Reveal

I might have gotten a bit of picture happy with this quilt.ย  You are forewarned.ย  There’s way too many pictures.

I love this quilt.ย  It’s a bit different for my usual scrappy loving self.ย  There’s only a handful of fabrics that need to be chosen for it and the putting it together is quite easy breezy once you grasp the whole foundation piecing bit.

I really do enjoy putting this quilt together.ย  There’s no frustrating parts to get through.ย  It’s all strip foundation piecing and half square triangles.

One thing I was a bit unhappy about was the fabric I chose for my background.ย  Unlike my original Carolina Mingle quilt, I chose one single fabric for the background instead of multiples.ย  I like both looks just fine, but I chose a border print this time around and though I love it, it has bits around the quilt that make everything look a bit different.ย  Notice the collection of polka dots varies.ย  That’s a pretty cool feature in my opinion, but there’s places that it clusters a bit too much and changes the look over the overall quilt.ย  Look at the large HST on the right, plus the top and bottom borders.

It is unique though and I decided not to rip it out.

I’ve mentioned already that I’m gifting this quilt to my mother for Christmas.ย  Fingers crossed that she loves it.

That Dream fabric in gold and cream is my absolute new favorite fabric and I’m glad I got to use it!ย  I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on more.ย  I actually based the whole quilt around that fabric.ย  When I found that the Herb Garden fabric matched it pretty well, I pulled colors from that one to build the rest of my color palette.ย  The only one I’d replace with hindsight is the Liberty print.ย  I’m not a fan of how it ends up looking like taupe when you stand back.ย  It’s a lovely fabric, but I wish I’d chosen something with a bit more happiness to it, like another pale pink.

All in all I’m pretty pleased with it.ย  The one Alison Glass fabric I used to complement the Dream fabric I’ve had in my stash for a gazillion years and it was just a scrap.ย  It was a nice time to use it and it was also my very last piece of the original Handcrafted fabrics.ย  I now am not an owner of any Alison Glass fabric except a few bits of Kaleidoscopeย left over from the Star Dance quilt.ย  I might remedy that soon!

I will be having a quilt along for this quilt sometime in 2019.ย  When I have all the details for it (probably January 2019), I’ll mention it.ย  I think it will start a little bit after I am Enough ends, to give myself a little break.ย  I’ll announce it here and on my newsletter when I know more.

I’ve been saying the skill level on this quilt is for experienced beginners and I haven’t had anyone contradict that yet.ย  I say that because it ends up with some very large half square triangles and you have to get creative about trimming them down.ย  I use this method for that.ย  It also uses foundation piecing.ย  Not paper foundation (I’m not always a fan of paper piecing in large quantities), but instead it uses a very old time method of sewing fabric on top of fabric to create the star beams in this quilt.ย  It’s part nifty and a little bit wasteful, but really makes the quilt come together easily.

I’ve got plans for a quilt pattern that uses this same method next year.ย  It will be scrappy this time around with major low volume and negative space love!

We’ll talk soon.ย  Hope you have a lovely week.ย  Hugs!

  1. I love this quilt Melanie! Itโ€™s warm and pretty at the same time. I think the ombrรฉ confetti is a great feature in the quilt. Iโ€™m working on quilting my second Carolina Mingle quilt right now. Iโ€™ve been really MIA in IG lately but Iโ€™ll post there when Iโ€™m done.
