Real-Time Free Motion Quilting: Light in the Dark Mini Quilt

Sometimes it’s nice to simply sit down and quilt.
No talking. No rushing. Just the rhythm of the sewing machine and the slow process of bringing a quilt to life.
In this video, I’m quilting my Light in the Dark Mini Quilt Pattern from the Book of Many Mini Quilts. If you enjoy watching quilting in real time or are looking for ideas for quilting your own projects, I hope you’ll enjoy stitching along with me.
Quilting Designs Used
For this mini quilt, I combined several of my favorite quilting motifs to create texture and movement throughout the quilt.
The quilting includes:
- Stitching in the ditch
- Ruler quilting
- Drapes quilted in the foreground
- Toothpaste swirls in the background
- A scalloped border to finish the quilt
Using several quilting designs together creates lots of contrast while allowing each section of the quilt to stand on its own.
The Light in the Dark Mini Quilt
Light in the Dark is one of the sixteen patterns included in my Book of Many Mini Quilts. These mini quilts are designed to be approachable, enjoyable to make, and perfect for practicing both piecing and quilting.

Swayful Quilty Class – BEGINS JUNE 29
A new quilt is beginning inside Quilty Class. Swayful features a woven knot design created from rotating blocks and simple snowball construction. The pattern is fat quarter friendly for the foreground fabrics and includes a unique border that carries the movement all the way to the edges of the quilt.
We’ll begin on June 29 and work through the quilt top together step-by-step as new lessons are released.
If you’re planning to make quilts with us throughout the year, Quilty Club is the easiest way to follow along and access each class as we go.
