July Studio Update: Swayful, Mini Quilts & New Fabric Arrivals

There’s been a lot happening in the studio lately, so I thought I’d bring you along for a little catch-up!

This month I’m sharing our current Quilt Class project, a peek behind the scenes at what I’m sewing, progress on the Book of Many Mini Quilts, a sneak peek at a brand-new quilt pattern, and the newest fabric collections that have arrived in the shop.

Swayful Quilt Class

We’re currently making the Swayful Quilt together inside Quilt Class!

The first two chapters are now available, where we walk through the pattern, talk about fabric selection, and start getting organized for piecing.

One of my favorite things about Swayful is how approachable it is when choosing fabrics. You don’t have to overthink scale or whether a print is busy or subtle. The biggest thing is simply creating good contrast between your foreground and your background.

I also share the paper plate organizing method I’ve been using to keep all of my pieces sorted while sewing.

Mini Quilt Progress

I’ve also been spending lots of time working on the Book of Many Mini Quilts.

This week I finished piecing and quilting both the Well Loved mini quilt and Light in the Dark. They just need binding before joining the rest of the growing mini quilt wall.

I’m having so much fun making these little quilts. They’re quick enough that I can usually piece and quilt one in a day, then bind it the next. Watching the wall continue to grow has become one of my favorite parts of the process.

Behind the Scenes

I’ve also been designing a brand-new quilt pattern.

I won’t give too much away just yet, but it features a giant star surrounded by wonderfully scrappy corners and finishes at approximately 100″ × 100″.

As soon as I carve out a little more sewing time, I’ll start piecing the quilt, and I can’t wait to share more with you.

Must Have Flowers

The Must Have Flowers collection is currently available for pre-order through July 9.

This collection was inspired by Monet’s love of flowers. While I certainly can’t paint like Monet, I wanted the prints to capture some of that same feeling with soft florals, subtle brushstroke textures, and painterly backgrounds.

It’s also the collection we’re using for the current Swayful Quilt Class, and I couldn’t be happier with how it’s sewing up.

Thanks so much for stopping by the studio! I hope you enjoy the update, and I’d love to hear what you’re working on right now.

Happy quilting,

Melanie
