Inside the Lulu Louise Quilty Class: From Fabric to Finished Quilt

We’ve officially wrapped up the Lulu Louise Quilty Class, and I thought it would be fun to take you behind the scenes and show you everything we made and learned along the way!
We made two beautiful Lulu Louise quilts using different fabric collections and completely different quilting designs. And I just love how they both turned out!
I’ve put together a video that walks you through the entire class, from preparing our fabrics and piecing the quilt top to free motion quilting feathers, scallops, flowers, and leaves.

Meet the Lulu Louise Quilt
Lulu Louise is a beginner-friendly quilt pattern featuring a beautiful V-shaped design created with simple strip piecing.
We use 14 foreground fabrics and a background fabric to create the design, and the strip piecing makes the construction efficient and enjoyable.
The pattern includes three sizes:
- Baby: 38″ x 48″
- Throw: 57″ x 72″
- Bed: 76″ x 96″
Inside the class, we work through the entire piecing process together, from preparing and cutting our fabrics to assembling the finished quilt top.
I walk you through each step so you can follow along at your own pace.
Two Lulu Louise Quilts, Two Different Looks
One of the things I really wanted to explore in this class was how much the quilting design can change the look of a finished quilt.
We made two versions of Lulu Louise, and although the piecing is the same, the fabrics and quilting give each one its own personality.
Our First Lulu Louise: Pretty Please Fabrics
For our first quilt, I used the Pretty Please fabric collection.
I wanted the quilting to feel soft and flowing, so we worked with two beautiful free motion quilting designs.
In the foreground, we quilted feathers that follow the movement of the V-shaped patchwork. Then we filled the background with S-curves.
We spend time planning our quilting design and practicing our feathers before moving to the actual quilt.
If you’ve been wanting to learn feathers, this is a wonderful opportunity to get more comfortable with them!
Our Second Lulu Louise: Happy Home Fabrics
For our second version, I used the Happy Home fabric collection with Bella Solids Bettys Brown for the background.
And this time, we took a completely different approach to the quilting!
We started with straight line quilting and stitching in the ditch using a quilting ruler. Then we added repeating scallops through the foreground fabrics.
For the background, we switched to playful doodle quilting, filling the space with flowers, leaves, swirls, and little connecting designs.
I absolutely love the contrast between the structured scallops and the free-flowing floral quilting.
And seeing these two finished quilts side by side is such a lovely reminder that there’s no single right way to quilt a quilt!

What Will You Learn in the Lulu Louise Quilty Class?
The complete class includes six chapters and 26 lessons, covering both quilt construction and free motion quilting.
Here’s a little look at what we’ll work through together.
Making the Quilt Top
We begin with the piecing process, including choosing and preparing fabrics, cutting width-of-fabric strips, organizing and sewing strip sets, cutting units, and assembling the columns that create the Lulu Louise design.
The strip piecing is simple and efficient, making this a really satisfying quilt to put together.

Free Motion Quilting: Feathers and S-Curves
Once our first quilt top is ready, we move into planning and quilting our first design.
We’ll practice feathers, quilt them through the foreground, and then fill the background with S-curves.
I love teaching these designs because they’re so useful on all kinds of quilts, not just Lulu Louise.
Bonus Free Motion Quilting: Scallops, Flowers, and Leaves
In our final chapter, we explore an entirely different quilting plan on our second Lulu Louise quilt.
We’ll work on stitching in the ditch with a quilting ruler, creating repeating scallops, and filling the background with doodled flowers and leaves.
It’s a wonderful way to explore different quilting techniques and see how they work together in one finished quilt.

A Little More Confidence With Every Quilt
I hope that seeing these two finished Lulu Louise quilts inspires you to experiment with your own quilting designs.
You can take the same quilt pattern, choose different fabrics, try a different quilting plan, and end up with something that feels completely new.
That’s one of my favorite things about quilting. There’s always something else to explore, practice, and learn.
I’ve loved making these quilts with you, and I hope you’ll join me in class!

I hope you leave here feeling inspired to make something you love and enjoy every little stitch along the way. 💕
