Christmas in July Quilted Pillows with Piping

I have always wanted to decorate with handmade decorations come Christmastime, but just can never find the time to get anything done in the month of December.ย  So when Susan over at Michael Miller asked if I’d write a Christmas in July post I was all in.

Thinking of Christmas in July would be something the opposite of me would do.ย  I only consider Christmas in December.ย  I don’t plan.ย  I don’t buy gifts early.ย  I do all last minute, except for maybe food.ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

The Poinsettia print is from a collection called Happy Holly-Days from Michael Miller.ย  You can find the collection for sale here.ย  The other prints are Fairy Frost in blood and Garden Pindots in black and jungle.

I feel like the poinsettia print is very vintage looking and makes me think of Christmases of my childhood.ย  I didn’t end up using the black Garden Pindot.

Remember when I mentioned wanting to go on a pillow making journey?ย  That will have to wait until next year, but I still want to do it.

This pillow project started with a half yard fabric of the poinsettia print, which I then cut into two 16″ squares, layered onto a bigger piece of Warm + Natural batting and quilted organic straight lines on.

I made my own piping, which I’ve never done before on a pillow.ย  After watching a few Youtube videos it was pretty easy.ย  I like piping on pillows.ย  It makes it look so much better, I think.ย  Once the piping was finally on everything fell into place.ย  I used a zigzag stitch on the inside perimeter to serge the edges and keep things tidy.ย  It has an envelope closure .

I am most proud of what’s on the inside of my pillows.ย  Nothing but bits of fabric!ย  Unusable scraps, tiny trimmings, smidgens of batting!ย  Yes, it’s a seriously heavy pillow that might be a bit lumpy, but it feels good to use up all my wastes in a pretty kinda way.

I plan on storing these away in the linen closet, but I can’t wait for this December when I can actually pull out some handmade decor.
