Evening Walk Quilt Reveal + My New Patchwork + Quilt class for beginners

I feel like I’ve been talking about this for ages. It’s actually been just a bit over six months. Still, that is a long time to be working on the exact same thing. This is my very first online class and it’s for the beginner quilter.

It was 2008 when I first started quilting and there were some blogs here and there and a few videos, but mostly I learned by just doing, gathering information from books, listening to my grandmother, fiddling my way through patterns that assumed you already knew “stuff”, and staring at quilts for hours on end just trying to “get” it. I also watched quite a bit of Craftsy about two years in after I’d already taught myself and just wanted to throw my hands up in the air. If I’d known what they were teaching when I first started I’d have saved so many hours. But even with that there is the matter of having to patch it altogether. I’ve got to take this class to learn this and then this class for that. Consider my Patchwork + Quilt class a one stop shop.

It’s exactly what I needed when I was a brand new quilter or more like a wanna-be quilter. I knew that I loved quilts and I knew that I couldn’t stop buying fabric. That’s all I knew.

This class covers beginning to end, everything, all of it, leaves nothing out, maybe even stuff you didn’t know you didn’t know. Back in 2018, one of my silent New Year resolutions was to be the quilter that I needed when I first started. And that is exactly what this class is.

About the Quilts

I’ve said this a thousand times, but the best way in my opinion to learn to make quilts is with a sampler quilt. Here’s the thing about sampler quilts: they usually cover a wide variety of skills because they mostly have one or a few blocks of the same design. When you learn and make a different block each week, your well of knowledge can grow more quickly.

The Patchwork + Quilt class comes with two quilt patterns: my Good Girl quilt (which is a perfect quilt for a beginner to tackle) and also the brand new Evening Walk quilt pictured above. Evening Walk is a traditional sampler. It’s traditional because traditional is easier when you are learning, I feel.

About the Class

Let me tell you a bit about how the class works. Its an email course. Lessons will be delivered to you via your email address.

Let me break this down even more:

You’ll purchase the class and will be given a downloadable PDF.
Open the PDF on your phone, tablet, computer whatever. There are instructions on it that will tell you to click a link on the PDF.
Once you do click the link specified, a page will open up like you are signing up to a newsletter, which you are. A newsletter that is also a class.
Type in your email address and your first name.
You’ll get an email that will ask you something along the lines of “did you mean to sign up”, which you will say “certainly!” and click the corresponding link.
After all of that is complete, you should immediately get an email with your first lesson called “Introduction to Patchwork + Quilt”.

So boom there is the step by step of how to get it started.

There are currently 26 emails of lessons in the class, but I may add more as I go if I get questions here and there that I think should be covered. So consider the class a living breathing thing that will be added to randomly.

I’ve got the emails/lessons on a set schedule: you’ll get the first one immediately, the second will come in around three days and so on and so on. When the Evening Walk quilt part of the class starts, the emails will change to just once a week to give you time to create each block. Each of these lessons is also listed in order within every email as well. This way you can skip around at will.

If you finish everything early and don’t want the emails to continue, you can just opt out of the class. Although once you opt out it is permanent, so I’ll leave that up to you.

What exactly the class covers

I do want to give you a few caveats, just in case, and so nobody is confused about what you are getting with this class. I don’t feel comfortable teaching you methods I don’t use, so I’m not going to. I’m going to teach you my methods, no secrets spared. I’ve told you that the class covers everything, but let me break it down for you even more.

There are three hours of video tutorials to help you every step of the way. Even if you aren’t a brand new quilter, but just want to improve on some your techniques, you may find this class helpful as well. You do get two quilt patterns with it as well, so there’s that too.

One more caveat, so that I can make myself feel like I’ve covered all of it, these are MY ways. They are not the only ways. Quilters have been making quilts for hundreds of years and their methods are of the variety. So just because I have a specific way of making a half square triangle and it straight up works for me 99% of the time, doesn’t mean it’s not the way that works best for you. We are all different and we all learn differently. That’s okay. Some of my methods I’ve learned here and there from other quilters, some of them I came up with what worked for me. There’s no wrong way, so take what you want from this class and let what you don’t want fade away.

A few things that the class DOES NOT cover because I don’t/rarely do: pin basting, straight line quilting and hand binding.
