Holding Light Mini Quilt Class: Chapter 3 — Quilting the Mini

In the Holding Light Mini Quilt Class, Chapter 3 is where the magic really starts to happen. This is the part where your quilt goes from flat to full of texture, and all those little decisions you made earlier start to show up in the best way.

We’re quilting this mini in a way that gives it a really soft, dimensional look, something I always come back to because I just love the effect.

Keeping the Foreground Light

For the foreground, we’re keeping things simple.

I’m mostly stitching in the ditch and adding just a few light stitches here and there. Nothing heavy, nothing complicated. The goal here is not to flatten the design, but to let it breathe a little.

When you keep the quilting minimal in the foreground and then go denser in the background, you get this really pretty puffiness that makes everything stand out just a bit more. It’s subtle, but it makes such a difference.

Quilting the Background

Now the background is where we really start to play.

I break it into two sections so it feels more manageable. The inside of the quilt and the border get treated differently, and that helps keep things from feeling overwhelming.

Inside the quilt, I’m working on stacked swirls. And I will just say it, this is a design I have to relearn every single time. I always feel a little rusty at the beginning, but after a few minutes, it starts to come back and that muscle memory kicks in.

If you’ve ever felt that way while quilting, you are not alone.

The Border Detail

For the border, we’re doing something a little different.

I’m quilting a half feather all the way around, then echoing it out to the edges. It gives the mini quilt a really finished, flowing look and frames everything nicely.

This part leans a little more into confident free motion quilting, so take what you love from it and feel free to simplify if that’s more your style.

Make It Your Own

And I really mean that.

You do not have to quilt this exactly the way I do. If you want something more beginner-friendly, straight-line quilting or simple designs are always a great option.

If you are looking for more guidance there, you can check out my Quilt as Desired class or the Finish It class, both go into simpler quilting options. And if you are part of Quilty Club, you already have access to those.

I also have some upcoming mini quilt classes that will focus more on straight-line quilting, so those are coming too.

Bringing It to Life

Chapter 3 of the Holding Light Mini Quilt Class is where everything starts to feel real.

The texture, the movement, the softness, it all comes together here. It’s one of those stages where you can really slow down, settle in, and enjoy the process.

And by the time you finish, your mini quilt is going to feel completely transformed.
