Swayful Quilty Class: Chapter 2 — Fabric Prep & Organization

Chapter 2 of the Swayful Quilty Class is now available, and it’s time to get your fabrics ready!
Before we begin sewing, we’ll spend a little time choosing fabrics, understanding how they work together in the quilt, and getting everything organized. A little preparation now will make the piecing process much smoother once we start building blocks.

Lesson 4 — Choosing Fabrics & Understanding Fabric Placement
In this lesson, we’ll talk about choosing a fat quarter pull, understanding the A and B fabric positions, and how those fabrics create the woven knot design throughout the quilt.
We’ll also cover a few simple tips for building a fabric pull that allows the design to shine.
Lesson 5 — Swayful Mockups & Color Inspiration
One of my favorite parts of designing a quilt is seeing how different fabric collections change the look of the finished quilt.
In this lesson, we’ll look through several Swayful mockups and talk about color palettes, contrast, and how different fabric combinations create completely different personalities for the same quilt.

Lesson 6 — Preparing Fabrics & Using Pressing Spray
Before cutting begins, we’ll prepare our fabrics and talk about why I like using pressing spray. This simple step helps stabilize the fabric and makes the snowball units easier to piece accurately.
Lesson 7 — Organizing Blocks with the Paper Plate Method
Finally, I’ll show you my favorite way to organize a quilt before sewing. The paper plate method keeps every block together, helps prevent mix-ups, and makes it easy to stay organized from the first unit to the last.
Ready for Chapter 3?
With our fabrics chosen, pressed, and organized, we’ll be ready to start sewing the Swayful units together in the next chapter.

HELLO,
I’m Melanie
Hi, I’m Melanie. I’ve been quilting since 2010, and what began as a small hobby has grown into a deep appreciation for the process of making and slowing down. Quilting has taught me patience, curiosity, and the value of showing up, even when things feel imperfect.
These days, I design quilt patterns, teach online self-paced quilting classes, and curate and design fabric with one goal in mind, helping quilters build skills and confidence while enjoying the journey from first stitch to finished quilt. I believe the process matters just as much as the finish.
