Understanding the Block
Before we ever sit down at the sewing machine, we spend a little time looking at how the Swayful block is put together. We’ll talk about the four units that make up each block and revisit the A and B fabric placement so you can see how those fabrics create the woven knot throughout the design.
Once you understand how the block works, the construction becomes much more intuitive.
I’m using the Must Have Flowers fabric collection.
Sewing Units 1–4
From there, we’ll work through each of the four units together with step-by-step demonstrations. We’ll cover pressing, accurate piecing, and a few tips I’ve picked up while making this quilt.
By the end of these lessons, you’ll have everything you need to assemble your first Swayful block.
Speeding Up Your Snowball Piecing
There are a lot of snowball corners in Swayful! The pattern is written using the traditional method of drawing a diagonal line on every square before sewing, but in class I also share a few ways to speed up the process.
I’ll show you how I use washi tape as a sewing guide and talk about when it’s comfortable to skip drawing those diagonal lines altogether. If you’re making one of the larger quilt sizes, these little time-saving techniques can make a big difference.
My Batch Sewing Workflow
We finish the chapter by stepping back and looking at the bigger picture.
Rather than completing one block at a time, I’ll show you the workflow I use in my own sewing room to keep everything moving efficiently.
Using the paper plate method, I sew everything I can before moving every plate to the pressing station. Once pressing is finished, everything moves together to trimming, and then on to the next step. Each block stays organized from beginning to end, but I’m always completing the same task across every block before moving to the next station.
This approach keeps me organized, cuts down on unnecessary movement around the sewing room, and makes even the largest Swayful quilt feel completely manageable.
Ready to Sew?
This is one of my favorite chapters because it’s where the planning starts turning into real progress. Watching that first Swayful block come together is such a satisfying moment, and I can’t wait to see what you create.

Happening Now
Swayful Quilty Class – BEGINS JUNE 29
A new quilt is beginning inside Quilty Class. Swayful features a woven knot design created from rotating blocks and simple snowball construction. The pattern is fat quarter friendly for the foreground fabrics and includes a unique border that carries the movement all the way to the edges of the quilt.
We’ll begin on June 29 and work through the quilt top together step-by-step as new lessons are released.
If you’re planning to make quilts with us throughout the year, Quilty Club is the easiest way to follow along and access each class as we go.
