September always makes me want to pull out the fall fabrics and start making little things for around the house. Not necessarily a whole fall quilt, but a pillow for the couch, something for the table, or a small project I can finish and actually use right away.

Cozy Fall Stitches was created for exactly that kind of sewing.

It includes five different fall projects, and each one is small enough to tackle on its own. You can make your way through all five, or just pick the project that fits what you feel like sewing right now.

Five Fall Projects in One Book

There are five projects in Cozy Fall Stitches, and I tried to give you a good mix of things to make.

Pumpkin Spice Placemat

The Pumpkin Spice Placemat is a pumpkin shaped placemat with a little stem at the top. It uses a pillowcase style construction, so there’s no binding to add when you’re finished.

This is a good one when you want a quick seasonal project for your table, and it would be really fun to make a whole set if you wanted one for every place setting.

Hand Stitch Companion Pillow

This one gives you an excuse to sit down with some hand stitching for a while.

For the Hand Stitch Companion Pillow, you can choose a geometric fabric and use the print itself as your stitching guide, or start with a solid fabric and mark your own design using a stencil and removable fabric marker.

The pillow is finished with a zipper back, so you end up with a proper removable pillow cover when you’re done.

Little Maple Mini Quilt

Little Maple finishes at just 9″ x 18″ and is made from two maple leaf blocks turned on point and stacked vertically.

You’ll work with half square triangles and basic piecing, and I included an optional hanging finish using a dowel and twine so you can put it right on the wall when you’re finished.

This is also a great scrap friendly project if you’ve got some good fall colors tucked away in your stash.

Pumpkin Star Pillow

The Pumpkin Star Pillow combines a pieced pumpkin with a little star right in the center.

There are enough different pieces to make the piecing interesting without turning it into a huge project, and once the pillow top is together, you’ve got plenty of room to play with the quilting.

This is one I like for the couch or a chair because it gives you that little bit of fall without having to redecorate the entire house.

Pumpkin Babies

And then there are the Pumpkin Babies.

These are little stuffed fabric pumpkins made with scraps, stuffing, and some simple hand stitching to create the pumpkin grooves. They’re quick to make, and this is definitely one of those projects where it’s easy to make one and then immediately decide it needs three or four friends.

A Good Time to Pull Out the Fall Fabrics

I think this is why I like small seasonal projects so much. You don’t have to commit to making an entire quilt just because September rolled around.

You can pull a few fabrics from your stash, make a pumpkin pillow or a little maple wall hanging, and suddenly you’ve got something handmade to bring out every fall.

And if you make one this year, maybe another one gets added next year.

That’s a pretty good excuse to spend an afternoon sewing.
