Finish It: Learn How to Finish Your Quilt from Basting to Binding

Do you have a finished quilt top sitting somewhere waiting for you?

Maybe the piecing is completely done. Maybe it’s even been folded neatly on a shelf for months. You did all that work to make the quilt top, and then you got to the quilting part and thought… I’ll deal with that later.

That is exactly what Finish It is for.

Finish It is one of my older Quilty Classes, and I wanted to bring it back into the spotlight because this class covers something every quilter eventually has to figure out: how to take a finished quilt top and turn it into an actually finished quilt.

Finish Your Own Quilts, Your Way

There isn’t just one right way to finish a quilt, and that’s one of the things I really wanted to show you in this class.

Finish It includes 40 lessons and more than 5 hours of video instruction, taking you through the entire finishing process.

We start with basting, including both pin basting and spray basting. I’ll even show you how I wall baste a quilt so you can see the whole process from beginning to end.

Then we get into the quilting.

Straight Line Quilting

If free motion quilting feels like too big of a leap right now, you absolutely do not have to start there.

Inside Finish It, we work through several approachable straight line quilting designs, including:

  • Organic wavy lines
  • Following your patchwork
  • Grid quilting
  • Stitching in the ditch

You’ll learn how to set up your machine and actually use these designs on your quilts rather than just practicing stitches without knowing where to put them.

And Then We Get Into Free Motion Quilting

This is a BIG part of Finish It.

We start with the basics and work our way into lots of different free motion quilting designs, including meanders, swirls, loopies, curls, leaves, succulents, feathers, and more.

But I also wanted this class to go beyond simply teaching you a collection of designs.

We talk about how to use them on an actual quilt.

You’ll see all over quilting, custom quilting, combining different designs, quilting foregrounds and backgrounds differently, and even working with rulers.

The goal isn’t for your quilting to look exactly like mine. It’s to give you enough techniques and ideas that you can begin deciding how you want to quilt your own quilts.

The Quilt Is Quilted… Now What?

We don’t stop once the quilting is finished!

I’ll also walk you through squaring up your quilt, adding a quilt label, making your binding, and attaching it.

And because there isn’t only one way to finish binding either, you’ll learn three different methods:

Machine binding, chunky stitch binding, and traditional hand binding.

You can try them and decide which one you enjoy most.

Pull Out One of Those Quilt Tops

If you’ve got a stack of unfinished quilt tops tucked away somewhere, go grab one.

Seriously. Pick one.

You don’t need to know exactly how you’re going to quilt it yet. That’s what the class is for.

Finish It was created to help you get comfortable with this part of quiltmaking, try different techniques, and build the confidence to take your quilts all the way from finished top to finished quilt.

And there’s something awfully satisfying about putting that final binding stitch into a quilt you finished yourself.
