Golden Sawtooth Star – Emerge Circle – Quilt Reveal
Emerge Circle is a charity group I host under the umbrella of do. Good Stitches created by Rachel Hauser of Stitched in Color. Each month a different member of our circle is lead quilter. Lead quilter decides quilt pattern, size, colors, all the details and members of our circle send blocks to the lead quilter. The lead quilter finishes the quilt and gives it to a charity or person of their choosing in need.

Such a simple quilt and that’s how I like quilts I plan on donating. All the blocks were made by my bee mates and I just stitched them together, added the border and quilted and bound it. I’m beginning to love the quilting of quilts every bit as much as I’ve always loved the piecing. I find myself reaching and stretching, failing and succeeding, all of it just for the journey of it. It’s been SO MUCH FUN.
Anyway, I’m rambling. Let’s dig in.
So I kept this simple. I asked for 12.5″ sawtooth stars in shades of yellow and gold. I asked for fussy cut centers too, just for the fun of it. I’m so thrilled with how it turned out. I was thinking I was going to have sashing between the blocks, but ugh, how I hate working with sashings. Instead, I sewed all the blocks together and then bordered it with a pretty wide border. The border is 6.5″ wide. I’m feeling it made it look a bit more modern. Maybe it’s just me.
None of the piecing took me long. Since all the blocks were sent to me, it only took me an hour or so to get the top completed. I spent the majority of my time on the quilting.
I’ve spent the majority of my journey in quilting not caring for borders on the edge of quilts, but after studying FMQ, I can really see how valuable they can be for adding some extra touches.
On this quilt, I went with orange peel bloom in the center of each of the stars and I did drapes on the star points. For all the background inside the blocks, I used a combination filler of swirls, toothpastes, leaves and a little swirl bloom that I tried out for the first time on this quilt.
On the border is where I had to dig deep. I wanted to do a feather that popped. So I did a half feather around the blocks and then swirls filled the remainder of the border. I’m not sure it’s exactly “correct”, but it was a great learning experience and I just really LOVE how it turned out.

Backing Fabrics – Newsprint by Carrie Bloomston and a few scraps.
Binding – Petit Potpourri in gold
Batting – Warm and Natural batting by the Warm Company
Thread – So Fine by Superior in Blizzard
Techniques Used – meander quilting, wall basting, and ditch binding.
I know I’ve taken a pretty long break from making FMQ video tutorials, but I plan on getting back to it soon. There were several on this quilt, I’d like to show you. My Bernina (what I use for all my FMQ) is currently getting serviced. It needed a good cleaning.
This quilt is being shipped out to someone I care about that is going through some things. I’m hoping that it will shed a little love.
The quilt is just beautiful. Always amazing how quilt blocks from several quilters are are merged together into one quilt that works together so perfectly. I especially love the backing with the gold strip through it.
