Scrappy 9-patch Quilt – Free Quilt Pattern – In Progress

Scrappy 9-patch Quilt

This is a commission quilt I’ve been working on. It was simple and fun and took no time at all really. Plus, it gave me a chance to really get a hold of that purple stash drawer of mine. It’s rammed full as I hardly ever use purples, but seem to collect plenty of them. Does this every happen to you with certain colors?

I have a free pattern download for you today with this traditional little 9-patch. I’ve geared it to using width of fabrics strips or already cut squares.

Let’s get into this…

Beginnings

I was asked to make this in purples, violets, and maroons and whatever other colors I felt it needed. It was also asked of me not to use too much white or low volumes. This was so HARD! Low vols or having my quilt against a pale background is my go-to. It makes everything always look so ethereal, calming, and it’s kinda my thing.

I made this happen though! Or hopefully I got the balance right. I added in some very pale pinks to make a little more calm.

I’d really love to make this quilt again, but in a color palette that feels more “me”.

Some of these fabrics I’ve had in my stash for a really long time. Like I mentioned above, I cleared out a good portion of my “purple stash drawer”. I don’t remember a lot of the fabric names. Some of the fabrics maybe a bit more familiar to you and can be found at M+M.

About the Pattern

I decided to make this one of my free patterns. There’s no extra tools needed for this one. It’s basic straight line sewing and easy to master, making it perfect for the beginner quilter.

I would even venture to say this is a very good “first time” quilt to make if you are brand new quilter.

You’ll get a good chance to see how a quilt comes together without any fretting about. It’s also a good chance to work on nesting and lining up your seams.

By the time this post is live I’ll probably have already quilted it. I actually have it all basted and waiting on me as I write this. I’ll do some simple quilting since it’s a busier quilt without much negative space, but I’d still like to do something with a bit of oomph to it.

I’ll just be over here second guessing my every decision. Have a good weekend!
