Free Motion Quilting – The A Dresden Quilt
Today’s post is part of a series called Free Motion Quilting. Find all posts in this series here.
This series assumes you are already know how to free motion quilt, but are just interested in learning about different designs. If you are brand new to FMQ and need to learn the basics, consider the Finish It class.
The machine I’m using is a Bernina q20 sit-down longarm machine. This machine works just like a domestic machine except there is much more space available and it’s easier to maneuver larger projects.
If you’ve never free motion quilted before, brush up on some basic skills first with this video.
If you are looking for some of my other FMQ videos, you’ll find them here.
What we are quilting
I’m quilting my most recent A Dresden quilt. You can find the free quilt pattern in the Free Pattern Library.
Today, I’m going to show you how to quilt:
- Loops, on the dresden plates
- Swirls, in the center of the plates
- Basic meander in the background

Supplies
- Gloves – Machingers.
- I’m using Polylite in Ecru for my top thread and Mettler white for my bobbin thread.
- You don’t need a fancy machine to free motion quilt, you just need one that has a feed dog that lowers (check your manual).
- I am quilting on a Bernina Q20 machine.
- I’ve spray basted if you are wondering why there are not any pins. Here’s the spray I use.
- Here’s the fabric collection I used.
