Ready to try half rectangle triangles? The Light in the Dark Mini Quilt is a 14" x 14" confident beginner project featuring a 9 patch center and half rectangle triangles that create the star points. In the Light in the Dark Mini Quilt Class, I'll walk you through the entire project, including my favorite way to trim HRTs using washi tape and a few Sharpie dots. It's such a simple method and takes so much of the guesswork out of getting those HRTs trimmed correctly. We'll piece the quilt top together step by step, and then we'll move into free motion quilting. My Soulshine quilt is finally finished, and I'm so excited to share it with you! In this video, I'm taking you on a close-up tour of the completed quilt, including the front, the back, and all of the quilting details. This version was made using my Calm + Content fabric collection and features custom free motion quilting throughout. The stars are quilted separately from the background, with ruler work to emphasize each star and a flower stitched in the center of every one. The background is filled with free motion doodle quilting using flowers, feathers, and leafy vines, creating lots of texture and movement. I also finished the binding by hand with a chunky running stitch, one of my favorite ways to finish a quilt. If you'd like to make your own Soulshine quilt, you can grab the pattern below. Before I start free motion quilting, I always make a plan. In this video, I'm sketching the quilting design for my Swayful quilt on my iPad before I ever sit down at the sewing machine. I'll walk you through my thought process, show you where I plan to quilt swirl flowers and matchstick quilting, and explain why I chose these designs for this quilt. Taking a little time to plan your quilting can make the whole process feel less overwhelming. It gives you the chance to experiment with ideas, see how different motifs work together, and head to the sewing machine with confidence.
