Meet Lulu Louise! 🧵 Lulu Louise is a beginner-friendly quilt all about simple strip piecing, color, and value. I originally designed this quilt for my book A Life With Quilts, and now I've revisited the design with three quilt sizes and a new, more efficient method for piecing. In this video, I'm sharing a closer look at Lulu Louise, including the story behind the quilt, fabric requirements, supplies, the three available sizes, and what we'll be working on inside the Lulu Louise Quilty Class. The class includes both piecing and free-motion quilting. We'll make the quilt top using simple strip sets, then plan and quilt feathers through the foreground and S-curves through the background. No specialty quilting rulers are needed for the quilting. Deciding what to quilt where can sometimes be harder than the actual free-motion quilting. Before I start quilting, I like to sit down with the quilt and make a plan. I look at the different areas of the quilt, think about what I want to emphasize, decide where I want more or less texture, and figure out how the quilting designs can work together before I ever sit down at the machine. In this video, I'm planning the free-motion quilting for my Light in the Dark Mini Quilt, but you can use this same process when you're trying to decide how to quilt any quilt. This video comes from the Light in the Dark Mini Quilt Class inside Quilty Class. In the full class, we take this plan to the sewing machine and work through the free-motion quilting one section at a time, including the foreground, background, and border. Needle turn appliqué is one of those techniques that can sound a little intimidating until you actually sit down and try it. In this video, I’m showing you how I needle turn appliqué by hand, including how I prepare the shape, turn the raw edge under with my fingers and needle, and stitch it to the background with small appliqué stitches. This is the method I use for the hand appliqué projects in my Book of Many Mini Quilts, and I wanted to create a visual demonstration you could come back to anytime you’re working through one of those patterns. I’m working on one of the mini quilts from the book in this video, so you’ll get to see the technique used on an actual project rather than just a practice piece.
