Uh-oh! Have you ever sewn a quilt block only to find out it’s not the size you need? Don’t worry–I’ve got you covered with an easy trimming trick! In this excerpt from my Dilly Dally class, I’ll show you a simple and foolproof way to fix your quilt block units when they come out the wrong size. Using just a ruler and rotary cutter, washi tape, and a Sharpie marker, I’ll walk you through how to trim your 4-patch block to perfection–no more wonky seams or mismatched pieces! Grab your supplies, and let’s get those blocks in shape
How to Easily Trim Quilt Blocks/Units to the Right Size
Getting quilt blocks to the exact right size can be tricky, but I’ve got a simple method to make trimming easier and more accurate! Follow these steps to ensure your blocks are perfectly sized every time.
Step-by-Step Trimming Method:
- Mark your ruler with washi tape:
- Identify the size you want your quilt unit to be (e.g., 2 1/2″).
- Place washi tape along that measurement on your ruler to create a quick visual guide.
- This helps eliminate the need to constantly search for small ruler lines
- Use a Sharpie to find the center:
- Locate the center of your desired size (for 2 1/2″, the center is 1 1/4″).
- Mark the center point on both sides of the ruler where the meet.
- this gives you a clear reference point for aligning the center of your quilt block/unit.
- Align and trim:
- Match the center of your ruler to the center of your quilt unit to ensure an even trim.
- Trim all the way around to achieve the correct size.
- Easily remove Sharpie marks:
- Wipe off any Sharpie marks using a Qtip dipped in nail polish remover–good as new!
This method keeps your trimming accurate, quick, and stress free. Give it a try next time your quilt blocks/units come out the wrong size! VIDEO BELOW 👇
