Quilt as Desired: Class Wrap-Up

Wrapping Up Quilt as Desired
This post marks the end of Quilt as Desired, a free motion quilting class built around practice, repetition, and learning to trust your hands at the machine. After quilting twenty-five practice blocks and assembling them into a finished rag quilt, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on what this class was really about and what I hope you take with you moving forward.
This wasn’t a class focused on perfect results or mastering every design on the first try. It was about slowing down, practicing intentionally, and allowing your quilting to develop naturally over time.
The Finished Quilt
Once all of the blocks were complete, we brought everything together into a rag quilt. Rag quilts are sewn with the seams exposed on the top of the quilt. Those seams are snipped and then washed and dried, creating a soft, textured finish that becomes better with use.
This style of quilt is very forgiving, which makes it a great way to finish a project like this. Instead of worrying about perfection, the quilt highlights progress. Each block holds a snapshot of where your quilting was at that moment in the class.
In the video above, I walk through the finished quilt, showing both the front and the back, along with some close-up details. It’s a chance to really see how the quilting changed from block to block and how confidence builds with consistent practice.
Noticing Your Progress
As you look at your own quilt, take a few minutes to really study the quilting. Notice how your movement changed, how your lines became smoother, and how your comfort level grew as you worked through the designs. This quilt becomes a record of that growth.
One of the things I love most about free motion quilting is that progress often shows up quietly. It’s not always dramatic, but it’s there in the way your hands move and how you approach the machine.
Thank You for Quilting Along
