Finishing My Fernweh Quilt in Garden Therapy

I finally finished my Fernweh quilt, and I’m excited to share a closer look at the finished piece. This quilt has been a long time coming, and finishing it felt like a really good reminder that quilts don’t have to be rushed to be meaningful.

This is the 72″ x 72″ Fernweh quilt, originally part of our 2023 quilt along. Even though all of the quilt top demos have been available for quite a while, I only just finished this quilt recently, and it felt really good to slow down and enjoy those final steps.

Finishing My Fernweh Quilt, Custom Free Motion Quilting + Final Details

In the video above, I’m walking through the finished quilt and sharing a closer look at the quilting and overall texture.

The Fabrics I Used

The quilt top is made with Garden Therapy fabrics, and I backed it with a coordinating wide back from the same collection. I love using a wide back when I can, especially when it ties in so nicely with the quilt top and makes the whole piece feel cohesive.

Quilting Details

For the quilting, I chose a custom approach that adds movement while still letting the piecing shine.

Inside the star, I quilted a wishbone design, which gives that area a lot of texture and interest without overpowering the shape. In the background, I used a continuous swirl, sometimes called a toothpaste swirl, to keep everything soft, flowing, and consistent across the quilt.

Both of these free motion quilting designs are covered inside my Quilt as Desired class, where we focus on building confidence and practicing designs in a way that feels approachable and pressure free.

Fernweh Quilt Along Demos

If you’re interested in making this quilt yourself, the original Fernweh quilt along includes demos for every step of making the quilt top. They’re a great resource if you like sewing alongside video guidance.

One Last Thought

This quilt is a good reminder that finishing happens when it’s supposed to. Sometimes a quilt waits. Sometimes you come back to it later. And sometimes slowing down is exactly what the project needs.

Thanks for quilting along with me.
