New Beginnings – Modern Sewcialites BOM

This month is Modern Sewcialites is about new beginnings.

For me, spring is all about the flowers, the green, and getting outside to enjoy it all.

I love that moment you start seeing the green sprigs coming out everyday and then you blink and suddenly green is everywhere.  Blink again and we are blanketed in all the shades of green.  The blooming trees (oh, cherry blossoms and magnolias!) start showing off for us and then you find that you can’t possibly sit inside another minute.

I’ve been doing a lot of my sewing in the evenings so that I can spend parts of the morning outside planting, walking, and even stitching on the porch swing.

The block this month was fairly simple and put together in a way that was different for me.  It turned out to be much more simpler than I visualized.  For example, when I put corners on squares, I usually do it starting with a square, draw a line, stitch to the corner and then toss the leftovers in a basket or in the trash depending on their size.  This block’s pattern was made with zero waste and made using the actual triangles instead of squares.

It’s very interesting to me how we could all be making the same thing, but taking different ways of getting there.  I loved exploring that.

I once again found myself sorting through all my Liberty Society prints.  Can I just say how grateful I am to have all of these luscious fabrics.  I petted them endlessly while making.

You can find Liberty Society available here.

I cannot wait to see this finished quilt with all of these tiny florals.  Stephanie unveiled the layout of the finished quilt the other day and oh, I’m excited.  There’s nothing like watching a quilt slowly come together.

Modern Sewcialites is a community hosted by Stephanie Kendron, host of The Modern Sewciety podcast.  A weekly listening ritual for me.

I’ve been listening to Stephanie’s podcast since around 2015, so when she asked me to join this community there was no other thought in my mind except “yes”!  You can read about this community and join in the link below.

Here’s everything on the design wall.  I’ve got a long way to go, but this is going to be incredibly soft.  The design for this quilt has some background pieces that gets added.  I’m wondering what I’m going to use.  There is kinda a bit of negative space, and I’m not sure I want to go with my usual low volumes for that job.  I was hoping for all Liberty, but now that I’ve seen the finished lay out, I’m thinking that’s not going to be possible.

I could do low volumes, but what do you think of this fabric.  I know it’s not my norm, but I really want the Liberty to stand out.  Maybe I’m overthinking this…..  I’d love to hear your thoughts!  Tell me in the comments below.

  1. Love that fabric for the back. I wish we had spring here! Under 20″+ of snow. Praying for a big meltdown 🙂 Enjoy your day!

  2. Melanie, I’m obsessed with your low volume quilts! I’m a brand new quilter (getting ready to start my first one) and have been doing research to help me learn about this glorious craft. I recently found your blog and spent hours here. 🙂 Anyway, I like that the Essex homespun has a bit of texture to it but I don’t think it will ‘read’ quite the same as your usual low volume pieces because the texture will only be apparent from very close up. However, the chambray color will read as ‘sky’ so it may be the perfect choice! I can hardly wait to see what you decide. Thanks so much for this lovely blog!

    1. Hi Dori! Thanks so much for reading along. I have a hard time staying away from low volume, so I’m already doubting my earlier plan for that quilt. We’ll see what happens! 🙂
