Hexagon Quilt #8 – quilt reveal

Sometimes it’s all about the fabrics.  Okay, MOST of the time it’s all about the fabrics.  🙂

This time in particular because I love each and every fabric I used for this yummy half hexie quilt.  I just want to snuggle all day.

Get you a cup of tea and get comfy.  Let’s look at pictures and talk about that dubious hard to conquer hexagon.

Crinkly yumminess!

If you’ve been a reader of mine for awhile, then you know I’ve made this quilt SO.  MANY.  TIMES.  But what’s one more.  This was a custom quilt request I received for someone wanting it to look like my original Half Hexie quilt.  You can see that one here.

I’m hoping I’ve got the color palette right, but either way, this version is MUCH prettier to me.  Probably a little something to do with all those luscious Art Gallery Fabrics.

I’ve done a bad job of recording all of my half hexie quilts, but you can see the majority of them here.

Let’s talk about this rascal!  Hexagons are hard to machine piece due to the fact that you would have to sew up a gazillion Y-seams.  It’s an uncomfortable sew.  Cutting them in half allows you to sew row by row style and without that Y-seam.

That means that this quilt gets broken down into tiny little rows.  There’s no quick trick to sewing this up.  It’s not my favorite quilt to make due to that fact.  But there is no piece work.  You cut your hexagons, put them up on your design wall and start sewing rows and then BOOM.  Done!

It’s still an uncomfortable sew though, but it’s made much easier with the help of the Hex n More ruler.  I love this ruler.  I’ve had it for several years and it’s gotten me through dozens of quilts.  It’s multifunctional so it can be used for many different quilts.

I use the biggest size hexagon the ruler offers: the 8″.  So think jumbo hexagons!

For my quilts backing I used Wild Beauty by Pat Bravo and this minty lovely by Jeni Baker.  For the binding I used this Morning Walk print from Leah Duncan.

By the way, have you taken a look at Leah Duncan fabrics?  You must.

I also made a matching pillow case to go with this quilt….

The back of the pillowcase matches the binding on the quilt.

I quilted in a meander style on both the quilt and the sham.  I used 30 weight Quilt+ thread in bright yellow.  I’m in love with the thickness of this thread!

I hope you have a good weekend!  And don’t forget to sign up for the quilt along this September if you haven’t already.  Click the image for details.
